A Life in Cheshire
Mention Cheshire to many and immediately they think of a flat county with plenty of green grassy fields being grazed by cows.
Although that is correct it is only part of the story. Those cows provide wonderful milk, a cheese that is famous the world over but there is so much more to this beautiful part of England.
To begin with there is salt and where you found salt you found the Romans.
Chemical industries sprang up around the salt, the most famous probably being ICI.

The need to transport the salt brought the canals that are still very much in use today.
While mentioning transport it should not be forgotten that Fodens manufactured steam powered vehicles which later progressed to diesel power and the family rivalry that spawned ERF. Crewe became the place where luxury cars that you may have heard of were designed and built, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Also Crewe played such an important part in the growth of the railway, an important railway junction and of course was home to Crewe Works which built and later scrapped many steam engines.
The M6 motorway built in the 1960s is now a main artery in the UK motorway system. More industries now are based in Cheshire and companies base their administrative offices in the county.
Silk spinning later replaced by nylon was a speciality of the region. Fortunes were made by mill owners but times were tough for the workforce as can be seen by visiting the museums dedicated to silk manufacture.
The county of Cheshire is full of historical interest and historical houses, famed primarily for their black and white appearance.
There is so much to see in Cheshire and a county where many who have built there homes would not think about moving to any other part of the country.
